The Purposes of Cub Scouting

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7 through 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions. (The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing.)

The 10 purposes of Cub Scouting are:

Character Development
Spiritual Growth
Good Citizenship
Sportsmanship and Fitness
Family Understanding
Respectful Relationships
Personal Achievement
Friendly Service
Fun and Adventure
Preparation for Boy Scouts

Den and Pack Meetings

Cub Scouts meet weekly on Tuesday evenings at the Marathon Central/High School Cafeteria for den meetings.  The den meetings are broken up into different rank groups (depending on age; see Cub Scout Ranks listed below) and work on different activities in the handbook provided to them.  The handbook is an important tool, as it keeps track of achievements/electives all used to work towards a rank badge.  The Tiger/Wolf/Bear Scouts meet in the cafeteria of the high school, and the Webelos Scouts meet in the church area.  Meetings normally run from 6:00pm until 7:15pm.

Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a pack meeting under the direction of the pack Cubmaster and Pack Committee. The committee includes parents of boys in the pack and members of the chartered organization.  If interested in being a member of the pack committee, please go to the Contact Us page and send us an email with your request.

Cub Scout Ranks

Cub Scouts are placed in certain rank programs based on their age and/or current grade.  The following information is the standard track in which Cub Scouts follow through progression in ranks:

Bobcat:  Required of all Cub Scouts when first join.

First Grade (or 6 years old):  Tiger Cub Scouts

Second Grade (or 7 years old):  Wolf Cub Scouts

Third Grade (or 8 years old):  Bear Cub Scouts

Fourth Grade (or 9 years old):  Webelos Scouts (year 1 group)

Fifth Grade (or 10 years old):  Webelos Scouts (year 2 group)

Upon completion of the Webelos program, Cub Scouts may achieve the Arrow of Light, the highest award given to Cub Scouts.  This signifies the "crossing over" into Boy Scouts.  Click HERE for a list of Pack 90's most recent Arrow of Light recipients.

Cub Scouting Ideals

Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Promise, the motto, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake,  and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy's sense of belonging.

Cub Scout Promise:
I, (name), promise to do my best
To do my duty to God and my country,
To help other people, and
To obey the Law of the Pack.

Cub Scout Motto:
Do Your Best.

In addition, Cub Scouts learn specific core values that are instilled in boys at an early age that will make a lasting impression for many years, if not for the rest of their lives.  Such qualities include:

  • Citizenship
  • Compassion
  • Cooperation
  • Courage
  • Faith
  • Health and fitness
  • Honesty
  • Perseverance
  • Positive attitude
  • Resourcefulness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
